The most common cause of this error is that a MS Office Application is stuck in a state where a file was previously viewed, Edited or commented on and MS Office Application is stuck open with a reference to the file.
Solution:
To fix this issue follow the steps below:
If you are using Window 7
- Save any open MS Office Applications files that you are currently working on
- Close any MS Office Applications you currently have open
- Open Windows Task Manager
- Look under the Applications tab and see if any MS Office Applications are running
- If one is running, Rt click on the Application and Click "End Task" from the context menu
- If you don't see any MS Office Applications > Click the "Processes" tab
- Scroll down the list of processes
- Try to locate any process that has "WIN" as a prefix EX: WINWORD.EXE
- Right click on the process and choose "End Task" from the context menu
- This should force the application to close. Once it is fully closed try to access the file again.
If you are using any Windows Version After 7
- Save any open MS Office Applications files that you are currently working on
- Close any MS Office Applications you currently have open
- Open Windows Task Manager
- Look under the Processes tab and see if any MS Office Applications are running in the area titled "Apps"
- If one is running, Right click on the Application and Click "End Task" from the context menu
- If you don't see any MS Office Application under applications click on the tab labeled "Details"
- Scroll down the list of details
- Try to locate any process that has "WIN" as a prefix EX: WINWORD.EXE
- Right click on the process and choose "End Task" from the context menu
- This should force the application to close. Once it is fully closed try to access the file again.
